
Prof. Khalid Mahmood graduated in 1987 and earned his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow, in 1992. He underwent structured neurosurgical training at world-class centers in the UK, progressing from Senior House Officer to Senior Registrar in Neurosurgery at NHS hospitals. After achieving certification and completing the Intercollegiate Board in Neurosurgery in 1998, he chose to return to Pakistan in 1999 to serve his country.
He served as Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at King Edward Medical University (KEMU) from 1999 to 2005, Associate Professor at PGMI/Lahore General Hospital from 2005 to 2012, and was later promoted to Professor at the same institution. He held the position of Project Director at the Punjab Institute of Neurosciences (PINS) from 2014 to 2016 and served as Principal of PGMI/AMC/LGH from July 2015 to August 2016. He was also the first Executive Director of PINS, serving from February 2019 to May 2023. Currently, he is practicing as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Surgimed Hospital and Doctors Hospital, Lahore.
During his tenure as Project Director of PINS and Principal of PGMI, Prof. Mahmood oversaw the allocation of PKR 850 million to PINS between 2015 and 2016, which accelerated the completion of this decade-long project. In 2016, he introduced Pakistan’s first 3-Tesla MRI in the public sector at PINS. He also designed an 8-theatre neurosurgery operating suite at PINS, inspired by the Academic Medical Center in Amsterdam, and equipped it with state-of-the-art technology, including a DSA machine that marked the beginning of endovascular procedures at the institute.
Prof. Mahmood pioneered deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson’s disease in Pakistan in 2014. He is internationally recognized for his expertise in endoscopic skull base surgery and minimally invasive brain and spine procedures. He has served as faculty in numerous national and international workshops, particularly those focused on endoscopic brain surgery via the nasal route.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to neurosurgery, he was awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz by the President of Pakistan in 2023 and was promoted to BPS-21 by the Government of Punjab for his meritorious service.
